There is so much skincare content being created today that genuinely useful education can easily get lost in the noise.

Every week, another skincare step is declared “unnecessary.”

One of the most common examples is toner.

You may have seen videos saying:

“You don’t need toner.”
“Toner is a waste of money.”
“Just skip it.”

Then, shortly afterwards, another skincare video tells you:

“Never apply your skincare to completely dry skin.”
“Your skin should be slightly damp before applying your products.”

And this is where skincare advice starts becoming confusing.

If keeping the skin hydrated after cleansing is important, then why are we automatically dismissing a product whose primary purpose may be to do exactly that?

The problem is not necessarily toner.

The problem is oversimplified skincare advice.


What Does a Toner Actually Do?

Modern toners are very different from the harsh, alcohol-heavy toners many people may remember from years ago.

Today, a toner can serve several purposes depending on its formulation.

A hydrating toner can help replenish moisture immediately after cleansing and create a comfortable base before applying your next skincare steps.

Different toners may also contain ingredients such as:

  • Glycerin

  • Hyaluronic acid

  • Panthenol

  • Centella asiatica

  • Rice extract

  • Green tea

  • Niacinamide

  • Ceramides

  • Heartleaf

  • Botanical extracts

Some are designed mainly for hydration, while others may focus on soothing sensitive skin, controlling excess oil, gently exfoliating, supporting the skin barrier or improving the appearance of uneven tone.

So saying that “toner does nothing” ignores the formulation of the actual product.


The Damp-Skin Contradiction

One of the most interesting contradictions in skincare content is the advice to skip toner while simultaneously recommending that skincare products be applied to hydrated or slightly damp skin.
